IRD Transfer Box Blanking Kit
to fit Land Rover Freelander 1
The IRD Box or transfer box is the box of tricks that balances the amount of drive to the front and rear differentials on the Land Rover Freelander 1.
As the Freelander 1 is always in 4WD then this unit can wear especially if tyres are not replaced together.
Many of the Freelander 1 models on the road now are prone to IRD box failure.
Classic signs are a thumping or knocking from the transmission / noise when decelerating / increased fuel economy etc.
You basically have 2 choices - either replace the IRD box ( £500 + Labour ) or convert your car to 2WD by removing the propshaft and fitting a blanking plate over the IRD box output to the rear wheels.
The Freelander will then be a very capable front wheel drive car with good ground clearance and a good sitting position etc.
Your tyre wear will reduce and your fuel economy will improve.
This kit includes the blacking plate machined from 6mm thick steel with a Zinc coating ( anti rust ) and also a tube of silicone gasket material - all you need to get the job done !
This is not a genuine Land Rover item.
